One Simple Way To Get Your Eyes Off Your Problems and Back on God

Psalm 119:35 Direct me in the path of your commands, for there I find delight.

You know you are walking along God’s path when you feel peace.

These moments tend to be so fleeting for us, however. We so often believe we are aligned with God’s instruction for us but are actually blinded…side tracked with out even realizing it with our own desires for control over which way our life, our day, even our mornings should go.

We get stuck in a routine of prayer for the same things day after day. A hope that the same worries will be washed away, the same flames of fear will be put out, the same insecurity and inability to know the future will be put to rest.

We tell God what we want, all the time wringing our hands in doubt and disbelief.

As followers of the true and mighty King, who died on the cross because He loves you and wants nothing but the most perfect plan to unfold for your life, our job is to seek to His will for our lives over our own.

Yet, more often then not, when we actually do seek Him, it is not to ask for His will, but to pray for our own. We may decorate our prayers with phrases like “thy will be done” or “if it be your will” but in our hearts, we are secretly devising our own plans, secretly hoping that His will be in line with what our meager human minds have resided upon as best for us…the life without pain or struggle.

How does this relate to letting go of dieting?

We pray for healing, but in the back of our minds we are also praying that the healing comes without getting fat…without gaining weight…without giving up our security blanket of food (to eat or not to eat) for comfort, even though we know it serves no purpose if it’s purpose is to cover our pain.

We pray for rejuvenation without the refining.

The definition of refine is:

verb 1. remove impurities or unwanted elements.

synonyms: purifyprocesstreat

2. improve (something) by making small changes

synonyms:improveperfect, polish (up), honefine-tune

We truly do want to be changed. We want our relationship to food and how we feel about the size of our bodies to be polished, purified, improved, perfected, fine-tuned, but we fear what that process entails.
We fear what we will have to let go of.
The poison that we have become so accustomed to drinking, we have a multitude of anxieties around trading it for the living water of Jesus.
That is where this reminder in Psalm 119: 35 is so very needed.
Psalm 119:35 Direct me in the path of your commands, for there I find delight.
We know what we want from our bodies.
What it all boils down to is we just want to be healthy. We just want to have a loving relationship with food and with ourselves. We just want our lives back. We want peace. We want freedom. We want to be able to look at ourselves in the mirror and not be disgusted, offended or judgmental of what we see.
We want God to swoop in and save us, but we have no real ability to follow His lead without our own human ideas of what healing “should look like” getting in our way.
The reason is simple: We forget that in the path of God’s commands we find delight!
Oh sure, maybe on some small scope we know this to be true. We can look back at places in our lives where we have experienced this delight but still it is so hard to trust that with this one problem, this issue that needs healing, He will show up for us.
So we pray with a back up plan always in action, ready to step up and take control when we do not see the hand of God as quickly or as prominently as we believe we should.
We assume we are doomed to failure and so we continue to drink the poison, all the while crying that we do not have the living water within our reach.
If you have accepted Christ, you already have the living water! It flows through you everyday. To access it, you must drink with faith.
To put down your poison is to rejoice in the truth…God’s path of commands delivers us delight…ALWAYS!
You want freedom from your food issues?
Stop thinking you have to figure it out.
You want to have peace around food and your body?
Stop reaching for your backup plan of poison and drink the living water.
You want to end binge eating, food restricting, calorie counting, macro measuring, excessive exercise, stress over your physical looks, emotional turmoil over your body… you want a better sex life, more intimacy, more friendships, a greater lust for life that isn’t being drowned out by years of dieting trauma and body hatred…
Focus on the delight of the Lord!
Get your eyes off your “problem” and put them back on the delight of the Lord.
God delights in us. (Psalm 149:4 For the LORD takes delight in his people; he crowns the humble with victory.)
We get so caught up in what are problems are that we forget who our God is.
He is the God who heals.
He is the God who renews.
He is the God who refreshes.
He is the God who, despite our plans to keep walking our own 40 year journey through the dessert, keeps calling to us to follow Him, to let Him lead without the set-backs of our own plans and un-hinged ideas of what our lives-the lives that truly belong to Him-should look like.
There is healing in the delight. There is peace in the delight. There is life waiting for you in the delight.
